FLEXSTEEL: Spring. Construction. Style.

Flexsteel is top-of-the-line when it comes to producing quality furniture.

With their commitment to craftsmanship, you will see the blending of construction and design are one in the same. Flexsteel is a worldwide company, based out of Iowa, with a proud history and quality standards.

THE BLUE STEEL SPRING

In order to create long-lasting furniture, Flexsteel developed a support system that could withstand a lifetime of use. Ergo, the Blue Steel Spring at the core of every upholstered piece. This design has been around for over 75 years, and prevents you from sinking into your seat after years of use.

QUALITY CONSTRUCTION

As you browse Flexsteel’s catalog of options, there is a team of designers and engineers waiting to make your vision come to life. The manufacturers build each piece of furniture from scratch, using quality ¾” solid wood for the frame.

They also stand by their tried and true standards of utilizing extra support in your furniture’s stress points (i.e. where the frame is going to bear most of your weight when in use), and ensuring mortise joints (with a sturdy cut/notch design) are functional and safe.

ON-TREND DESIGNS

It’s often times hard to believe that “no two designs are alike.” However, with all of Flexsteel’s models and styling options, it’s true! In addition, they put just as much thought in to the quality of their fabrics, as they do their frames. The endless fabric and leather options provided by Flexsteel are tested for high resiliency, durability, and resistance to abrasions.

Whether you are furnishing your living room, dining room, or sleeping sanctuary, Flexsteel is going to make your finished product a comfortable one. They offer stationary and reclining pieces (even lift chairs!) for every room, and the refined model designs range from casual to formal, and can be customized from fabric to foot.

There are hundreds of fabric options available for you to choose from, including an entire Gallery Selection exclusive to Gallery retailers like Plymouth Furniture & Bedding Showrooms! If your style is more classic or contemporary (or somewhere in between), Flexsteel’s on-trend fabric options can help you complete the look of any space.

IN THE DETAILS

When selecting your new Flexsteel design, no detail will be overlooked. They will customize every element including the stain on the feet of your new chair or sofa, and the nail trim that frames the arms or base.

What is the Right Mattress for Me?

Now is the best time to buy a new mattress. A new year provides a new opportunity to finally sleep in comfort and give the next 12 months all you’ve got!

However, the task of selecting a new mattress can be quite daunting. There are many manufacturers to assess, prices to compare, and variants to research. However, convenience does not always mean comfort.

SIZE

Choosing a mattress for one sleeper:

  • A bed that is too narrow will leave you feeling restricted. Size up! A spacious double bed will provide you more comfort.
  • A queen bed is great for those who prefer the extra space, but it may be too large for one individual. This is why you should always test a mattress in-store before any long-term commitment.

For partners:

  • A King or California King mattress should provide plenty of room; however, be aware of the size of your bedroom. Choosing a mattress that is too large can make you feel claustrophobic in an average or below-average space.

FIRMNESS

  • Firmness labels vary between manufacturers! The firmness of a mattress comes from the deeper, support layers. A mattress should be firm enough to provide proper support to your spine, while maintaining it’s natural curve.
  • Mattresses with “softer” comfort layers will help relieve pressure points while you sleep. Think about lying down on a hardwood floor. Where is your weight bearing down? To help relief pressure points, you want to sink into the top few inches of your mattress, in these areas.

TYPE OF MATERIALS — USED

A mattress is only as good as what is in it. Buying a mattress with unknown materials could be risky, as the mattress may soften/degrade much faster.

Even though some mattresses are more expensive, they tend to use better quality materials.

How To Choose The Right Mattress?

Finding the right mattress can make a big difference when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.  Three elements to always consider when shopping a new mattress are:  Size, Comfort, and Durability.

Mattress Sizing

Mattress Sizes/Dimensions can vary slightly between manufacturers. You will want to look at your bed set and consider how high your mattress can sit from the floor for you to comfortably get in and out of the bed everyday.

Most mattress retailers offer three different height foundations (often called boxsprings) that will allow you to change the height of the bed without being forced to get an overly thin mattress or overly thick mattress. The three foundation options would be the standard foundation which is 9″ in height, then there is the low profile foundation which is usually 5″ in height and for bunk beds and people that really do not want much of a foundation a Bunkie board is only 1.5″ in height.

In addition, your mattress should be longer than the tallest person sleeping on it, and wide enough to accommodate side sleepers who may fold their arms and legs to get comfortable at night.

Make sure your mattress and bed set can fit comfortably within the space it is located before deciding on additional decor to compliment the sleep space.

Mattress Materials

The most important thing to consider when selecting a new mattress is how it supports your spine. You will want to find a mattress that can maintain the natural curve and alignment of your spine throughout the night, and can respond properly to your body’s movement in order to redistribute your weight evenly across the mattress.

Most mattresses are available in Firm, Medium, Plush, or Ultra Plush variations with coil and/or foam comfort layers. It is impossible to provide a “one size fits all” recommendation, and proper support and relaxation is subjective to the user. The easiest way to determine which style/type of mattress you need is to personally test them.

Mattress Durability

Today’s mattresses should be replaced every 5-7 years, based on their condition and your personal comfort.

If your mattress appears old and worn — dips and divots, sagging on the sides, visible coils — it’s a good sign you are ready for a replacement.

If your mattress no longer provides you with a comfortable support — the sides collapse when you sit on the edge, you can feel the coils, or there is creaking/shifting noise when you move — you will also want to consider new options.

The longevity of your mattress will depend on how long you sleep at night, if you use your bed for reading or working in addition to sleeping, or if you have any personal changes in weight. The more use/support mattresses provide, the faster you will need to replace them.

A simple rule-of-thumb:  If you wake up feeling fatigued or sore it’s time to replace your mattress. There are a number of highly-recommended TEMPUR-PEDIC, Sealy, and Stearns & Foster options available in our Plymouth Furniture & Bedding showrooms, and our team is always ready to help you find the perfect fit!
