Our Story

Once Upon A Time

Did you know Plymouth Furniture wasn’t always Plymouth Furniture? Once upon a time, not too long ago, Jim and Mary Shields opened Plymouth Hardware Inc. in 1977. Taking advice from a friend, the couple started Sit-N-Sleep furniture upstairs of the hardware store. The successful growth of both stores led to the move to a large facility. In 2000, the Shields family purchased the 90,000 square foot Fairfield plaza  and Sit-N-Sleep was then renamed Plymouth Furniture. Originally shared among five businesses, Plymouth Furniture had a retail footprint of over 15,000 square feet and has now expanded to over 46,000 square feet.

Plymouth Furniture Inc. TODAY

Plymouth Furniture has been expanding ever since. In 2006, a clearance section was added in the former hardware store. In 2010, Jim and Mary’s son Mike began his journey at Plymouth Future. Today he is the General Manager of daily operations. Both Shields’ generations still play an active role in the corporation, making Plymouth Furniture the successful family business you know and love.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

‘Tis the Season

December has rolled around which means one thing: Christmas. Yes, it is finally the most wonderful time of the year. We are all ready for this holiday season.

From elaborate Christmas light displays in front yards to lopsided trees with too many ornaments, decorating remains one of the most popular Christmas festivities. Never underestimate the power of interior design. A string of lights or a strand of mistletoe can turn the average living room into Santa’s workshop . If you are planning on decking the halls of your home, look
no further. Our store is filled with holiday decor  perfect for the season. We also have a wide selection of affordable furniture in both our showroom and clearance center that would be perfect Christmas gifts.

2020 has been a challenging and unpredictable time for everyone. Take time this holiday to relax, connect with loved ones, and make new memories. The year isn’t over quite yet!

COVID-19 Procedures

Our Response to COVID-19

Even during a global pandemic, our customers remain our top priority. With COVID-19, we have created new procedures and taken extra precautions to provide a safe experience for you. Living through a pandemic can be difficult and stressful. Here at Plymouth Furniture, we have created an atmosphere that is safe, fully functional, and comfortable.

Following the CDC recommendations, cleaning has been increased to a daily basis. Our team is constantly sanitizing surfaces around the store to minimize germs. We have also decided to remove our pillows on the mattresses to create a cleaner enviornment. If you would like one to try out on a mattress, feel free to ask! Automatic hand sanitizer dispensers have been placed around the store for your personal use. Even with being in a 50,000 square foot building, our employees will remain socially distanced in addition to wearing a face covering.

In-store shopping remains open and delivery to homes continues. If you do not feel comfortable with either of these choices, curbside pickup is always an option. We are always committed to making the health and well-being of our customers, families, and staff our top priority.

New Storefront

Out With the Old and In With the New

Change is happening here at Plymouth Furniture. If you’ve swung by our store recently, you might have noticed a few differences. After 21 years, we decided it was time to replace our storefront with a brand new sign made by Marshall Sign, LLC.

Not only does the new and improved sign show off our updated logo, but is also versatile. It’s appearance depends on what time you decide to visit us. During the day, the sign appears to be burgundy and grey, the staple colors of Plymouth Furniture. However, at night, the sign radiates bright white. Make sure to stop by in the A.M. and P.M. to see both looks!

In addition to our storefront, we have added renovations to our Stearns & Foster and Tempur-Pedic galleries. The new black wooden panels and dusty blue walls create a sleek and modern ambiance in the store.

While there has been a lot of change in the past months, we will always promise to hold on to the core values of Plymouth Furniture. We take pride in our affordable prices, large selection, and top notch customer service. Signs may come and go, but our commitment to you will remain.
